Description

Graduate Program Orientation: Research

Justification:

Currently, Mexico faces a complex and multifaceted environmental situation, characterized by significant challenges in various areas such as deforestation, air and water pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change. According to Martínez (2009), a solution based solely on the existence of green economies and technologies under a strictly neoclassical economic approach is not sufficient, as it moves away from social equilibrium, a basic premise for achieving sustainability.

Environmental economics advocates for sustainable development, incorporating a strong ethical element and respect for society and nature (Farley, 2006). Ecological economics has been called the science of sustainability (Constanza, 1993; Dodds, 1997). To achieve this, it is important to understand the relationship between life and nature and the processes that affect and put it at risk, such as ecological degradation, environmental pollution, and natural resource depletion.

Mission:

To train Master’s graduates in Environmental and Ecological Economics with analytical, critical, ethical, and creative capacities to generate and apply knowledge; with the ability to use economic analysis to solve socio-ecological and environmental problems; and with the skills to manage and implement research projects related to the fields of environmental and ecological economics.

Vision:

By 2030, the Master’s Program in Environmental and Ecological Economics envisions itself as a socially engaged graduate program, applied to the local and regional context; with national and international recognition and leadership in the field of environmental and ecological economics, supported by a faculty of highly qualified professors with recognized academic trajectories.

General Objective:

To train Master’s graduates in the field of Ecological and Environmental Economics who can identify the limits of the biophysical and socio-cultural environment in the face of increasing production and consumption arising from economic activities. With an analytical, critical, ethical, and creative mindset, they will recognize the systematic interaction between the economy, society, and the environment; and contribute to problem-solving from the perspective of Ecological and Environmental Economics, generating knowledge that supports different economic agents in decision-making processes.

Specific Objectives:

The student will be able to:

  • Interpret the theoretical principles of Environmental Economics and Ecological Economics associated with the limits of economic growth.
  • Apply methodological tools that allow these principles to be implemented in addressing multidimensional environmental problems.
  • Develop a critical, creative, and innovative attitude for the continuous search for alternative solutions in the field of sustainable development.
  • Analyze the formulation and implementation of environmental policies, as well as their monitoring and evaluation.

Goals:

The Master’s Program in Environmental and Ecological Economics aims to:

  • Graduate at least 60% of students per cohort within the program’s scheduled duration.
  • Promote national and international mobility, both in-person and virtual, for at least 50% of students per cohort.
  • Encourage the participation of at least 70% of students per cohort in national and international academic conferences (in-person or virtual) for knowledge dissemination.
  • Ensure that at least 70% of students in each cohort have an article accepted in an indexed journal in collaboration with their thesis advisors.
