Program description

Justification

The Master’s Degree in Earth Sciences arises from the diversity of current changes that pose new challenges to higher education and its academic institutions. Hence its responsibility to train responsible citizens, with relevant knowledge to actively participate in solving current and future problems of society; generating and disseminating knowledge, developing scientific and technological research, and at the same time contributing to preserving culture and the consolidation of values for social coexistence, with a humanistic approach (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization [UNESCO], 2015).

To do this, the processes of international economic integration and the role of higher education in the construction of society must be taken into account. In this way, the transfer of knowledge and technologies is a guiding axis for the future of higher education in developing countries (Ochoa, 2000).

Furthermore, considering that learning relationships are lived in and from our environments. Environmental reality must be thought of as the integration of interrelated and interdependent processes, with multiple causes, which requires an interdisciplinary study and a holistic vision by all those involved. Therefore, the resistance to conceiving the learning process as a unified system of organism-environment relationships is implausible.

From this perspective and given the need to find new methods that lead to new solutions, the training of professionals with knowledge, skills and attitudes that can contribute to the study of earth sciences is essential for the Master’s Degree in Earth Sciences. All of this is based on concrete experiences in the physical and social environment, the formation of knowledge, the raising of awareness and the development of commitments and initiatives that seek environmental care.

  • Mission

Train teachers in Earth Sciences capable of generating relevant and high-quality interdisciplinary knowledge that is competitive, critical and creative with values of respect for the environment and humanity in the fields of geology, seismology, climatology, management and handling of water resources and socio-environmental problems linked to different sectors, thus contributing to the sustainable development of society and its environment, with gender equity and ethical commitment.

  • Vision

To be a national and international reference in the training of human resources of academic excellence, capable of generating scientific knowledge in the geosciences, focused on their relationship with the various sectors, promoting the development of an environmentally responsible culture.

  • Objective

Train high-level professionals for the study and application of Earth Sciences, under interdisciplinary approaches in order to solve local, regional and national problems integrating a socio-environmental perspective.

  • Specific objectives
    • Train teachers in Earth Sciences, with the highest academic level, with the capabilities to carry out relevant, original and independent research, as well as collaborate and direct research groups.
    • Contribute to the decentralization of scientific development in Mexico, establishing a pole in the south-east of Mexico, from the UV Earth Sciences Center, through the development of research that strengthens the solution of local and regional problems.
    • Carry out research projects in the area of Earth Sciences that contribute to solving the priority needs of the Country, particularly in the Southeast of Mexico, through links with different sectors.
  • Goals
    • Achieve a terminal efficiency per generation of at least 80%.
    • That at least 30% of the students per generation carry out a research stay in a national or international HEI
    • Hold at least one academic forum or conference, national or international, per generation where there is a minimum student participation of 80%.
  • Guidance: Research
