Program description

Justification

Addictions Surveys done in Mexico and in some countries of Central America constitute both the knowledge base on trends in drug use, as the basis to identify related priorities with the provision of attention services to the phenomenon that, due to its dimensions, it´s considered among the main public health problems in the region; adding the fact that Mexico and the Central American countries are the main transit route for illicit drugs from South America to the North, which translates into the presence of criminal organizations, increased violence and ungovernability. According to the «Declaration on the guiding principles of drug demand reduction» issued by the United Nations General Assembly which refers to the initial procedures that each state must undertake to operate the programs in the matter, the importance of the creation of expert professionals in demand reduction is highlightedto make possible the implementation of prevention and treatment programs.

The same document calls for drug demand reduction programs to cover all aspects of prevention: discourage initial consumption; reduce the harmful health and social consequences of drug abuse; provide information, education, public awareness services, prompt intervention, advice, treatment, rehabilitation, relapse prevention, post treatment and social reintegration. Stressing the importance and need to train, comprehensively and multidisciplinarily, to professionals in the field, as well as design execute and evaluate policies, strategies and programs in all related aspects.

Following these guidelines, our Postgraduate course includes professionals from various disciplines such as medicine, psychology, anthropology, law, among others, to foster a plural environment of integration and feedback, following the basic guidelines that the United Nations Organization (UN) applies in its policies and action plans: the inclusion of the gender approach, the link with other projects and the participation of society.
