LGAC3. Language policy and planning.

The study of language policy and planning deals with decisions made in relation to languages. In general terms, policy is defined as the choice made by the authorities to regulate the relations between a society and groups of language speakers, whether they are mother tongues, first languages, second languages, national languages or foreign languages, the latter in the educational system. Language policy can be national or regional. The study of planning takes into account the decisions made by the authorities in relation to languages. Since the arrival of the Europeans, the history of Mexico has been marked by assimilation policies systematically practiced with the introduction of the Spanish language. Regarding foreign language learning in Mexico, it should be mentioned that it is a particular phenomenon since language teaching has long been reserved for urban areas. In rural areas, the government has oriented its policy towards the teaching of the Spanish language. This line will deal with the country’s language policies associated with educational and social policies.

    • Linguistic policies on foreign languages in the Mexican educational system.
    • National and international policies in favor and/or against this diversity.
