Gender equality in HEIs in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic: measurements of progress and differentiated effects of confinement

Coordinator: Rubén Hernández Duarte

Preamble:

Gender equality measurements in HEIs must not be considered in isolation from the COVID-19 pandemic and its generalized and widespread effects. Various studies and reflections at the international level show that while the health emergency has impacted academic life as a whole – research, teaching, students, administrative population – when a gender perspective is incorporated,  clear gender-differentiated impacts are observable as a result of the unequal distribution of responsibilities (babies, school-age minors, sick or disabled people and older adults). The tension between the world of HEIs and the world of care has a direct influence on the dedication of time to all activities carried out by academic, student and administrative communities, as well as on measurements of their performance and productivity. This suggests that in the near future, if policies are not tailored to the crisis, inequalities could be accentuated or there could be setbacks in the progress of community diversification and the removal of obstacles to women’s advancement in spaces where their participation has historically been limited.

Objective:

The objective of this thematic axis is to promote reflection on gender equality progress and challenges for HEIs in the context of the pandemic based on studies and measurement tools, as well as proposals for policies to respond to confinement and strengthen gender equality in all areas: academic, student and administrative.
