Feminisms and academia in the HEIs: contributions, transformations, and challenges

Coordinator: María Eugenia Guadarrama Olivera, Luz del Carmen Jiménez Portilla, María del Rocío Ochoa García and Emma G. Bailey.

  Preamble:

The inclusion of feminisms in Higher Education Institutions (IES) has contributed to the definition and application of feminist theories and methodologies in teaching and scientific practice characterized by a deep political commitment aimed at recognizing and transforming social, cultural, environmental, political and economic conditions that produce inequality, discrimination and gender-based violence in different contexts in the Americas. It has also been a contribution of feminisms to academia, the recognition that the experience of inequality, discrimination and violence caused by the symbolic order of sex-gender becomes more complex with the intersection of other characteristics such as ethnicity, age, nationality, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, among others. Although it is now possible to recognize the role that feminisms have played in the production of scientific knowledge that is politically-committed to the transformation of societies, their incorporation into teaching and research has been a complex and challenging process.

Objective:

The objective of this axis is to reflect on the impact that feminisms have had on the transformation of academia within HEIs, through feminist theories and methodologies for the development and application of knowledge for research in different disciplinary fields, and on the inclusion of feminist pedagogies into formal and non-formal education, developed by all the people who make up university communities, both inside and outside institutional spaces.

Topics:

  • Methodological proposals and feminist theoretical/conceptual frameworks in research.
  • Contributions from feminism to curriculums and study programs.
  • Non-formal educational practices of feminist reflection, awareness-raising and training.
  • Experiences of feminist teaching and research practices during the COVID-19 pandemic.
