Using <strong data-start=\"488\" data-end=\"517\">weighted Voronoi diagrams<\/strong>, it is possible to visualize areas of greatest behavioral relevance and uncover spatial patterns organized according to these variables.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"656\" data-end=\"659\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"661\" data-end=\"690\">\ud83d\udd2c What do we contribute?<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"692\" data-end=\"942\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"692\" data-end=\"774\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"694\" data-end=\"774\">An automated method to segment experimental spaces based on displacement data.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"775\" data-end=\"858\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"777\" data-end=\"858\">Clear visual representations of behavioral patterns under different conditions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"859\" data-end=\"942\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"861\" data-end=\"942\">A functional tool for comparative and experimental studies in behavioral science.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"944\" data-end=\"1093\">\ud83d\udc65 This research is a collaboration between the <strong data-start=\"992\" data-end=\"1018\">Faculty of Mathematics<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"1027\" data-end=\"1061\">Center for Biomedical Research<\/strong> at the Universidad Veracruzana.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"1095\" data-end=\"1098\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1100\" data-end=\"1121\">\ud83e\uddea The Experiment<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1123\" data-end=\"1205\">To test this method, we designed an experiment with the following characteristics:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1207\" data-end=\"1543\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1207\" data-end=\"1238\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1209\" data-end=\"1238\"><strong data-start=\"1209\" data-end=\"1222\">Subjects:<\/strong> 6 Wistar rats<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1239\" data-end=\"1370\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1241\" data-end=\"1370\"><strong data-start=\"1241\" data-end=\"1269\">Experimental conditions:<\/strong><br data-start=\"1269\" data-end=\"1272\" \/>a) Water deprivation<br data-start=\"1294\" data-end=\"1297\" \/>b) Food deprivation<br data-start=\"1318\" data-end=\"1321\" \/>c) Combined deprivation<br data-start=\"1346\" data-end=\"1349\" \/>d) No deprivation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1371\" data-end=\"1419\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1373\" data-end=\"1419\"><strong data-start=\"1373\" data-end=\"1386\">Sessions:<\/strong> 24 sessions of 20 minutes each<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1420\" data-end=\"1462\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1422\" data-end=\"1462\"><strong data-start=\"1422\" data-end=\"1440\">Sampling rate:<\/strong> 5 frames per second<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1463\" data-end=\"1543\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1465\" data-end=\"1543\"><strong data-start=\"1465\" data-end=\"1490\">Experimental setting:<\/strong> Open field (92\u00d792 cm) with food and water dispensers<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"1545\" data-end=\"1548\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1550\" data-end=\"1592\">\ud83d\udd0d What is a weighted Voronoi diagram?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1594\" data-end=\"1625\">In this computational approach:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1627\" data-end=\"1926\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1627\" data-end=\"1672\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1629\" data-end=\"1672\">The space is divided into a uniform grid.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1673\" data-end=\"1757\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1675\" data-end=\"1757\">Generator points are identified based on where the subjects spent the most time.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1758\" data-end=\"1834\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1760\" data-end=\"1834\">These points are assigned a weight proportional to the accumulated time.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1835\" data-end=\"1926\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1837\" data-end=\"1926\">The resulting diagram segments the space into <strong data-start=\"1883\" data-end=\"1925\">Regions of Behavioral Relevance (RBRs)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1928\" data-end=\"2049\">These regions reflect the parts of the environment with the highest functional or motivational relevance for the subject.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2051\" data-end=\"2054\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2056\" data-end=\"2091\">\ud83c\udfaf What do the diagrams reveal?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2093\" data-end=\"2203\">The results show how different motivational conditions reorganize spatial behavior in clear and distinct ways:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2205\" data-end=\"2518\">\u2714\ufe0f <strong data-start=\"2208\" data-end=\"2238\">Food or water deprivation:<\/strong> areas near the corresponding dispenser become dominant.<br data-start=\"2294\" data-end=\"2297\" \/>\u2714\ufe0f <strong data-start=\"2300\" data-end=\"2325\">Combined deprivation:<\/strong> effects are not simply additive; food areas are more relevant than water ones.<br data-start=\"2404\" data-end=\"2407\" \/>\u2714\ufe0f <strong data-start=\"2410\" data-end=\"2429\">No deprivation:<\/strong> peripheral zones (e.g., corners) become behaviorally relevant, possibly as \u201csafe bases.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2520\" data-end=\"2523\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2525\" data-end=\"2554\">\ud83d\udcca Why is this important?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2556\" data-end=\"2672\">Each RBR provides key information about the spatial organization of behavior. Analyzing these patterns allows us to:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2674\" data-end=\"2842\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2674\" data-end=\"2705\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2676\" data-end=\"2705\">Identify key activity zones<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2706\" data-end=\"2757\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2708\" data-end=\"2757\">Compare behavior distribution
