What about men? Masculinities and Gender Equality at HEIs

Coordinator: Benno de Keijzer

Preamble:

In the last decade we have witnessed the emergence of women’s social protest both on the streets and in the HEIs. This protest tends to focus on discrimination and gender inequality, with femicide and other forms of violence as the patriarchy’s main manifestation. Another worrying area has to do with the insufficient co-responsibility of men in parenting and care – an issue that presents itself with increased intensity and clarity during the pandemic.

Both problems required the urgent development of much clearer, stronger, and deeper strategies with men to address and prevent these situations social sphere in the general, and the university sector in particular. Some interesting experiences have already emerged as part of a cultural shift towards gender equality.

Objective:

To carry out a critical assessment of the role of men in different forms of violence and discrimination in HEIs, as well as the issue of co-responsibility in care, also reporting on initiatives and good practices to overcome these situations and converge towards gender equality.

Topics:

  • A diagnostic of the problem (institutional practices and resistances)
  • Good practices and challenges in working with men
  • Proposals for policies and programmes aimed at men in HEIs
