Omens
They announce good or bad luck.

The male garlic cut on first Friday of March, are tied with red ribbons in the shape of a crown to frighten off bad spirits and sorcerers. They also bring good luck.


María Sabina

In Huautla de Juarez, a town in the Mazatecan area in the mountains of Oaxaca, there was a famous witch doctor called María Sabina who used hallucinogenic mushrooms to diagnose and cure diseases.
The Mazatecas use many varieties of mushrooms: those that grow on cattle excrement, the ones from San Isidro, those called little birds that grow on dead logs, and the ones called denunbe that grow in the bagasse of the sugarcane (Psilocybe caerulences). They believe mushrooms can be male, female or have both sexes, so they must be eaten in pairs. When there is a lack of mushrooms due to drought, they use the virgin's seed (datura stramonium) or pasture leaves (Tagetes Patula L) which also have hallucinogenic virtues.
Mushrooms and other hallucinogens are considered “blood and flesh of Christ” and God sends them so that they speak with the voice of a sage who can put an end to the bath things. María Sabina cured with the magic of words.
