Hats

.Hats have a European origin. Natives have included them in their costumes and have made them as important as any other garment. For example, Huicholes decorate them with cardboard figures which are hanging, red felt, bead bands, feathers, wool pompons, fresh flowers and squirrel tails or deer hoofs.

The common hat worn by mestizo farmers as well as many native groups is the “petate hat”. It is made with braided strips of palm and its making can vary. Some are made with a long palm braid which is sewed by hand or with machine. Others are made by weaving the fiber. In this case, they are woven circularly beginning in the center.
Due to the fact that it is such a common garment, especially in the country, there are many industries dedicated to make them and many materials, shapes and finishing.
