YULIESKY GONZALEZ
With a profound knowledge of both the history of Cuban Jazz as well as the Cuban popular music,
and the influences of Classical European music as well as crispy African rhythms, Yuliesky Gonzalez has a fluent ability to write new Cuban Jazz, with an elegance and variation that makes the listener hold the breath in enjoyment. He is capable of lifting the compositions to a level of such quality, that even hardcore musicians get inspired by the innovative tunes.
Classically educated in Camaguey, the young trumpet player started early performing with big names like Omara Portuondo and Felix Valoy, from Buena Vista Social Club, Rolo Martinez from Cubanismo, Grammy winner Rene Luis Toledo, Eddie Palmieri, Alexander Abreu & Habana de Primera, to name a few. Since 2010 he is member of Berlin Big Band and in 2011 he became member of the Kenyan artist Makadem, expanding the band to Makadem & The Afro Cuban Experience. HIs own band “Tierra Caliente” was re-established in 2010.
It was a straight yes from the two capacities, guitar player Bjarne Roupe (Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Hermeto Pascual, John Scofield, Deedee Bridgewater, Eddie Harris, Toots Thielemans) and Saxplayer Tomas Franck (Joe Henderson, Jerry Bergonzi, Toots Thielemans, John Scofield, Eliane Elias, Bob Brookmeyer, Steve Swallow, Carla Bley, Ernie Wilkens, Art Farmer, Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, Dick Oates, Django Bates, David Sanborn) to form part of Gonzalez’ group.
“I heard Yuliesky Gonzalez play two years ago in Berlin. I was amazed by his facility on the trumpet. His range is exceptional as is his projection, particularly in the higher register”
Gerard Presencer
“I am sure Yulio will continue to take by storm any audience for whom he performs.
Gonzalez trumpet playing is really amazing — truly world class with all
the qualities of imagination, power, range, sustained improvisations and group
synchrony that are really the skills of a great horn player, and with a modesty
that made it all the better. What it said on WOMEX is true; “Yuliesky Gonzalez has a
fluent ability to write new Cuban Jazz, with an elegance and variation that makes the
listener hold the breath in enjoyment. He is capable of lifting the compositions
to a level of such quality, that even hardcore musicians get inspired by the
innovative tunes”
