INFORMATION ON THE UNIVERSIDAD VERACRUZANA,
THE STATE AND THE CITY OF VERACRUZ



Universidad Veracruzana

Founded in 1944, the Universidad Veracruzana (UV) is the main public institution for higher education in Southeast Mexico and one of the five most important in the country. Enrolment currently stands at approximately 45,000 students and the teaching staff numbers 6,678. The Universidad Veracruzana offers 111 programs (technical, superior technical, undergraduate and graduate) and has earned world-wide artistic fame as a result of the active presence of 14 music groups, notably the Xalapa Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Folkloric Ballet and the Tlen Huicani Group. It is one of the most highly decentralized institutions in the country and is spread over five campuses in 14 cities. The Universidad Veracruzana has recently implemented an integral and flexible education model based on apprenticeships, program enhancement in society and on the creation of high-level Units of Library and Computer Services (USBI) developed in accordance with the specific environment.

State of Veracruz

The State of Veracruz is located along a 745-kilometre coastal stretch, on the Gulf of Mexico. It has great potential for national development: ranked sixth out of 32 in the national economy, and the region is at the heart of an important economic corridor of great cultural diversity. With a population of 6.9 million people, Veracruz is the third most populated state; its 2.1 million children and youth receive educational services. Combined with the State of Oaxaca and Chiapas, the region presents the greatest biodiversity in the country. Forty rivers and 35% of the country's surface waters are found within its boundaries. The State is a major producer of electrical energy and is home to 93% of basic petrochemical production facilities. 25% of the country's coffee is grown in Veracruz as well as a significant proportion of crops such sugar cane, rice, oranges, pineapple, rubber and vanilla. The State is the top national bovine producer and has three of the most important commercial ports in the country: Veracruz, Tuxpan and Coatzacoalcos.

The city of Veracruz

Veracruz is considered the oldest city of Mexico. Originally known as Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz, the city of Veracruz was founded on the Chalchihuecan beaches by Spaniard conquistador Hernán Cortés on April 22nd, 1519.

The climate is tropical and the annual average temperature is 25.3°C. The city is equipped with a modern hotel infrastructure including 12,000 hotel rooms of all categories, from family residences to five-star hotels. Veracruz offers over 500 restaurants and 250 evening entertainment venues like bars and nightclubs. Its museums, aquariums, beaches and promenade combine to make Veracruz a major Mexican tourist destination.
